The spaciously designed palace square is dominated by the basin's cascades, created between 1780 and 1785 by the Bohemian sculptor Rudolf Kaplunger. These sandstone cascades replaced the original wooden cascade. The figurative decorations represent the river gods of the Rögnitz and the Stör. The Ludwigslust Canal was built between 1756 and 1760 as a 26 km long connecting axis, connecting these two rivers and enabling the Baroque water features. The castle has had various uses during its almost 800-year history. Until the 18th century it served as the residence and administrative center of the Mecklenburg dukes. During the 30 Years War, Wallenstein stayed in the castle for 3 days. The ironworks located in the city allowed him to produce iron military equipment.
