The baroque palace was built from 1772 to 1776 after the model of Versailles, after Ludwigslust had been designated as the seat of government of the Mecklenburg dukes in 1756. The 150 hectare castle park is one of the most beautiful facilities in Germany.

"Ludwigslust Castle is a classicist ensemble of a castle with outbuildings and a landscaped garden in the town of the same name in southwestern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

It was from 1763 to 1837 main residence of the (Grand) Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The large-scale facility with the castle building as the center and the Hofkirche as an architectural counterweight go back to the core preserved and designed by Johann Friedrich Künnecke facility hunting lodge Klenow with its surrounding gardens and was later expanded by the architect Johann Joachim Busch. The castle and the church are integrated into a planned city whose main street leads to the Schlossplatz. Together with the city and the garden area, the complex forms a complete ensemble that is unique in Mecklenburg.
