The Pfaffenteich (Low German: Papendiek) was created by building a dam (later called Spieltordamm) at the northern end, probably shortly after the town was founded in the 12th century, initially as a mill pond in what was once a boggy depression. The body of water originally extended about 350 meters further south to the level of Schloßstraße, where the mill dam bordered it to the south and a water mill documented since 1178 was in operation.
