11月 5, 2025, Pfaffenteich Promenade
The Pfaffenteich in Schwerin is a centrally located body of water in the heart of the city and is one of its most famous landmarks. It was artificially created in the Middle Ages and originally served as a millpond. Today, the approximately twelve-hectare Pfaffenteich is a popular spot for walks and relaxation. Surrounded by historic buildings, it offers a picturesque view of Schwerin's skyline with the imposing cathedral in the background. The lakeside promenade is particularly charming, with cafés and benches inviting visitors to linger. In summer, small boats cruise the pond, and events and festivals are regularly held here – a lively meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

When the subtle lighting of the bridge structure reflects in the water of Ostdorfer Lake at dusk, its elegant curve comes into its own. In 2021, the new, impressive cycle bridge between the two peninsulas of Krösnitz and Dwang was officially inaugurated. The steel structure has a total length of 92 meters. The bridge completes the 1.2-kilometer-long new cycle path from southern Dwang to the Krösnitz peninsula. "The nature-oriented tourist cycle route runs on municipal land directly along the shores of Lake Ostorf and Lake Faulen. With unobstructed views of both lakes and the city skyline, it offers a strong attraction for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge connection creates a link for cyclists between the Hamburg-Rügen long-distance cycle route and the Residenzstädte circular route. https://www.schwerin.de/news/cab63f59-1c77-11ec-b47c-1967de695b51/

One of Schwerin's nine lakes is located in the middle of the city and is lined with wide promenades. It covers around 12 hectares of the city's area and is 2.80 m deep. Seven potential World Heritage ensembles stand on its banks and bear witness to a confident, lively government history of the grand ducal residence city. https://www.welterbe-schwerin.de/residenzensemble/pfaffenteich-mit-uferpromenade

The Pfaffenteich (Low German: Papendiek) was created by building a dam (later called Spieltordamm) at the northern end, probably shortly after the town was founded in the 12th century, initially as a mill pond in what was once a boggy depression. The body of water originally extended about 350 meters further south to the level of Schloßstraße, where the mill dam bordered it to the south and a water mill documented since 1178 was in operation. From here the water flowed into the Burgsee. A count's mill was in operation until the 19th century. A second mill stood on the Aubach, which became the property of the cathedral chapter, from then on was called the Bischofsmühle and was in operation until 1914. A frequent topic of dispute between the counts and the cathedral chapter, which also took possession of the mill pond, was the water's dam height. The canons, who at that time still tended their gardens on the east bank, gave the popular name “Pfaffenteich” to the lake. Source:https://de.m.wikipedia.

8月 21, 2023, Arsenal am Pfaffenteich
When the residence was moved back from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837, the need for representative and functionally located barracks and storage for military technology and equipment arose. Georg Adolph Demmler led the construction of the arsenal and created a building in the style of Florentine palace architecture. It comprises two courtyards that are visually connected by a central projection with a tower structure and includes the military hospital on Wismarschen Strasse, which was built in 1828. Over time, the building took on various functions. Until 1865, parts of the Grenadier Battalion were housed there; after the Second World War, it served as refugee accommodation and then various police institutions. Since October 1990, the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior has been located in the arsenal. During renovation and reconstruction work between 1991 and 2005, the building was given a reddish coat of paint after restoration work. www.welterbe-bewerbung-Schwerin.de/welterbe-bewahren/das-residenzensemble/gebaeude/arsenal

From this point you have a beautiful view over the Pfaffenteich with the cathedral in the background. If you go up the church tower you also have a great view over the Pfaffenteich.

The third church built with a special reference to the renewed claim to power of the Mecklenburg royal family, St. Paul's Church is built on the highest elevation in the city. It forms a striking line of sight along Schlossstrasse to the Niklot Hall in the main tower of the castle and to St. Nikolai above the Pfaffenteich. It thus connects the castle as a center of power with the constantly growing parts of the city. The neo-Gothic church has been preserved in all its original condition to this day.
