The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. A piece of track with an old freight wagon can still be admired here in front of the old train station.

Beautiful building and great for a short break.

Opposite the Schäfersruh restaurant is another highlight: the old train station in Schapen. It was inaugurated in 1906. The stationmaster lived upstairs in the house. The steam locomotive took day-trippers to Elm and Asse – an early era of tourism. Later, only freight traffic ran, and in 1971, train service was discontinued altogether, and the tracks were dismantled. The old station fell into disrepair until it was declared a listed building in 2000. In addition to the beautiful building, there is also a railcar from the early 20th century to admire. Detailed information can be found on the "Living in Braunschweig" website. I found it interesting and quite unexpected to come across something like this in the forest.
