The Scharmützelsee appears peaceful on this sunny late October day. Incidentally, it is not named after a brief military conflict, but rather takes its name from the Middle Low German corruption of the Old Sorbian word for buckthorn, Čremušn. Brandenburg's second largest lake is ten kilometers long, up to one and a half kilometers wide and a maximum of 29 meters deep.

Nice bridge over the canal on a particularly nice bike path along the Spree through the forest. Pay attention to the large reinforced concrete posts in the middle of the roadway (otherwise it can be very painful).

The lake is magnificent! Nature, culture, and a great trail. The water is also amazing—wonderfully soft and clear. It's supposed to be the best swimming lake in Germany 🙂 I highly recommend walking around it, but Wendisch-Rietz wasn't to my taste—too touristy 🙄

A wooden bridge over the Spree existed before 1669. It was renovated in 1855 and rebuilt as a stone bridge in 1890 due to the canal widening. During World War II, the bridge was blown up by German soldiers. In 2001, the current wooden bridge (New Flood Bridge) was built on its new site. It connects the flood meadows with the meadows from the Spreebogen to Lake Kersdorf, known as Rehagen.

This is one of the oldest (operating) locks in Brandenburg. The southern chamber (on the right in the photo) is still almost original and short. The northern chamber (on the left in the photo) is a new construction and significantly longer. Each of the four lock gates has a different design, and the lock house houses an exhibition on this and the history of the Oder-Spree Canal, which can be viewed. At least, once the coronavirus pandemic is over.
