The Houwald family's pretty castle is now a primary school. The outdoor area has been designed to be child-friendly.

The diameter of the original Slavic castle of Raddusch was 38 m inside and 58 m outside. The castle was surrounded by a moat about 5.5 meters wide. Two tunnel gates led into the interior of the 7 meter high wall. In the castle courtyard there were 4 wooden wells, one of which was almost 14 meters deep. During the excavation, many things were found in this well, which are now displayed in the fascinating fountain display case. Building structures were found in the castle courtyard that were mainly used as granaries and warehouses.

The area is now inhabited and completely cordoned off, i.e. all buildings are locked and all doors/windows are nailed shut. The only option is to book an official L.P. tour through a provider (https://www.go2know.de/event/das-sanatorium-der-feintuchwerke/) and explore the entire area and all buildings freely and independently in 6 hours! I decided to do this and can therefore absolutely recommend the tour, because it is definitely worth it!

The Slavic castle of Raddusch is a replica of a Slavic refuge castle that is largely true to the original and is located near the village of Raddusch in the Brandenburg Niederlausitz, which is now part of the town of Vetschau/Spreewald. It is considered a museum.

The Slavic Castle is located directly on the motorway near Vetschau and is easy to reach by car or bike. The Slavic castle was opened in 2003, and a museum was integrated into the ramparts, which vividly presents and highlights the 10,000-year cultural history of Lusatia with archaeological finds. The externally reconstructed complex was built exactly on the spot where a Slavic refuge castle was located over 1000 years ago. The remains of the original building were discovered during archaeological investigations in advance of an opencast mine near Vetschau and it is thanks to the cessation of opencast mining in this area that the Raddusch Slavic castle even exists in this location.
