On the west side of the old port is also the Bastion of Santa Katerina, which is a remnant of the fortification system of Chania. This impressive bastion was built during the Venetian period to defend the city against naval attacks. Today it offers visitors a glimpse into the city's defensive history and panoramic views of the harbor and old town.

The Byzantine and post-Byzantine collection of Chania is housed in the KatholiKon of the Monastery of San Salvatore, a 15th-century monument. Mosaics, funerary inscriptions, frescoes, icons, architectural sculptures as well as ceramics, miniature works and coins represent the historical and artistic identity of the Prefecture of Chania in Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods.

The fortress from the 16th century. was built by the Venetians as protection against the Arabs and stretched almost around the entire old town. In the northwest, the Firkas Bastion monitored the narrow harbor entrance.

In 1467, Venice ordered the establishment of shipyards in the port of Chania to repair its ships. In 1593 sixteen shipyards (arsenals) had already been built. The construction of the Moro shipyard began in 1607. Since then they have served various purposes. Today one of them houses the exhibits of the permanent exhibition of ancient and traditional shipbuilding of the Maritime Museum of Crete.

The construction of the “Great Arsenal” began between 1585 and 1600. Over the years it housed the Christian Community School (1872), numerous Theater performances (1892), the public hospital (1923) and the town hall (1928 – 1941). To date, it has been transformed from an exposed ruin into an impressive venue for events and exhibitions.

In the 7th century things became turbulent in Chania: the city was taken by Byzantine, then by the Saracens, then reconquered by the Byzantines. From this period you can find some Byzantine traces in the architecture of Chania, such as the remains of this Byzantine house.
