The baroque castle was built from 1724 and received a garden in the English and French style with some valuable sandstone sculptures. It can now be rented for guided tours, conferences, seminars, weddings, music events or art exhibitions, among other things. The castle park, on the other hand, offers visitors a 34-station educational trail, whereby each station can come up with interesting facts interactively (through QR codes). It is accessible free of charge all year round.

In 2007, the 6th Krabatfest took place at the castle, which was opened by the President of the Saxon State Parliament, Erich Iltgen. A year later, the 100th anniversary of the almost completely renovated castle was celebrated on the private grounds with the local residents.[5] After the death of the owner in 2014, the castle was sold to a Dresden entrepreneurial couple in October 2015

The baroque palace had different owners, by the way, Count Heinrich von Brűhl also bought it, had the banquet hall redesigned in the baroque style by Knödel... Whoever attends a concert there today can enjoy the ambience of the hall. However, Count Brűhl was rarely here, because he stayed more in Dresden or Schloss Pförten, sold it on to Macollini... and, and... Today it belongs to an events company

Already around 1742 a manor was occupied. In 1847, construction work on the palace grounds began, which lasted around 50 years. In 1898 the sewing machine manufacturer Bruno Naumann, who had been the owner for five years, rebuilt the palace in neo-Renaissance style. He was followed in 1903 by Walter Naumann, who lived in Schmorkau until 1917. As early as 1907 he had sold large parts of his other properties to the German Empire, which laid out the military training area on the Königsbrücker Heide. After 1917 Schmorkau Castle served as an officers' mess.

In 1683 Elstra Castle was sold to the von Knoch family. They kept the castle in family ownership until 1922, with the daughter Countess von Lynar and subsequently the von Hartmann-Knoch family being owners from 1802 to 1814. In 1902 the castle fell victim to a fire again and was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style the following year. In 1922 it came to Heinrich von Helldorf. Since then, the castle has only rarely been inhabited. At the beginning of the Second World War, a convalescent home for war wounded was set up in Elstra Castle.
