7月 6, 2025, Pinnerkreuz Viewpoint
The cross is approximately 18 meters high and consists of a cross spire, a shaft, and a base. High up on the Pinnerberg, which is easily accessible by the Cochem chairlift, stands the Pinner Cross, a vantage point with a magnificent view of the Moselle Valley. The name goes back to a shepherd who tried to save one of his lost animals from falling and lost his life in the process. The cross was erected in his memory. The Calmont is a prominent peak on the Moselle. The highest elevation is 380 meters high. Interestingly, the Calmont summit cross is not at the highest point, but below it. This may be because the Calmont is a ridge above the Moselle. The location of the summit cross offers a prominent view of the Moselle - better than from the highest point. Therefore, the summit cross makes much more sense at this point. Source: https://www.calmont-klettersteig-moselschleife.de/calmont/

It is particularly beautiful in October when the leaves change color. Shortly after 10 a.m. we walked from Eidiger-Eller, first over the Todesangst and the Höhenweg, so we were above the Moselle loop at the right time. There is a rest area with a bench, from where we could watch how the fog revealed the colorful landscape.

You can also enjoy the view without hiking up. Drive up with the car. Drive quite far, then comes a gravel road, this approx. 2km comes a parking lot for hikers. From there it is not far to the summit cross and Vierseenblick. Together about 2km. Above are great wide hiking trails. Well suited for beginners. Then down to Bremm where the second vantage point is easily accessible on foot. So everyone has something.

Hello, dear hiking friends/nature lovers. The hike on the contour line above the Calmont is of moderate difficulty, especially if you stay on the high trail. The trail is adequately developed and there are extensive views. Once you have reached the tree line, coniferous and deciduous forest alternate. The lookout points of the summit cross, Roman mountain sanctuary, Vierseenblick and fire station hut are rewarding in many ways. The extensive Moselle valley with the Moselle loop, folds of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, changing woodland, and distant views of valleys to the north awaken the senses of young and old. Different mosses enliven the views of the path edges and windbreaks in the adjacent forest. We will repeat the tour in May/June, because then the vineyards on the slopes and the Moselle valley are green! Alternatively, when the vine leaves are glowing in bright colors! Backpack food is recommended!

There are several ways to get to the Pinner Kreuz. Once from the Endert with the cable car/chair lift. For those who like it more sporty, there is a steep path right next to the cable car, sure-footedness is required, but it is also indescribably beautiful. Another path zigzags up near the train station. Also strenuous, but not as steep as the path next to the cable car and also very scenic with a beautiful view of Cochem. You can drive to the game park in Klotten/Cochem (it's also on the hill) and from there it's about a 20-minute walk to the Pinner Kreuz.

Calmont panoramic view The panorama includes both the entire “Calmont-Kloster Stuben-Petersberg” cultural route and views of the distant heights of the Hunsrück. It illustrates in an impressive way the unity and interrelation of nature, culture and landscape in the Moselle valley and shows: - The winding course of the Moselle, which has cut deeply into the ground for about 2 million years against the uplift of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, which continues to this day. - The contrast typical for the Moselle between the flat sliding slope & (river inside) and steep impact slope & (river outside flow!). - Viticulture, which goes back to Roman times and has determined the life of the people on the Moselle for 2000 years. - In the steep slopes, the characteristic vineyard terraces with their dry stone walls, eponymous for the term terrace Moselle. - The wine villages with narrow streets, small-scale buildings and diverse roof landscapes, characterized in their color by the slate, the local material of the roofing. - The churches and the ruins of the Stuben monastery as an expression of Christian faith and evidence of high building culture as well as the prestige of their builders. - The Petersberg with the chapel and the only preserved mountain cemetery on the Moselle, formerly connected to the Stuben monastery via a crossroads. - The railway bridge at Eller, part of the so-called "Kanonenbahn Berlin Metz" ’. - In the background the high basin &, one of the highest elevations directly on the Moselle, with the remains of a Celtic defense system. You have to go up here! There is a completely different perspective on the Reichsburg. Beautiful! And good for your stamina when you climb up here on foot!

The Pinner Cross is at a height of 255 meters, from there you have a wonderful view over Cochem and the Moselle. Easily accessible via a steep but beautiful ascent. You can also go up with the chairlift.
