The simple late baroque functional building was hastily erected in the summer of 1783 to serve as a guest house for Karl August and his hunting party. Building materials were obtained from the ruins of Ilmenau Castle and the surrounding forest. Goethe often spent time here as a guest. The museum's exhibition is well worth seeing because it offers insights into the hunting habits and social life of the Weimar court. The location, lonely and closely connected to nature, the Werra spring, a lion's head, as the beginning of a river that leads up to the North Sea, was the basis for the special topic of this project. As an overall concept, something should be created where people are able to see the beautiful again and enjoy the wonderful. The design of the building is based on the architecture of the Swiss mountain huts. The basement and the ground floor are made of precast reinforced concrete. The attic is built using a timber frame construction. The building material wood is a main theme. A connection between tradition, old wood and modernity was created. In addition to the inviting hiking hut, the area at the source of the Werra is adorned with a special feature, the leaning tower. This tower with an inclination of 12 degrees is unique. Created at the request of the operator Wilfried Ehrhardt, we planned, manufactured and installed it on the Rennsteig - on the ridge of the Thuringian Forest. Visitors can walk up the tower and marvel at nature at their feet from above. The viewing platform can be reached via an inclined plane, 24 meters long. If you want to visit the Werraquelle, you strangely have two options. There are two Werraquelle in the Thuringian Forest: the rear spring near Siegmundsburg and the front spring here near Fehrenbach. You can fill up your water bottles at both. But only here at the front spring near Fehrenbach is there an additional hut that invites you to linger. The Werraquell hut was reopened at Pentecost 2019.
