3月 26, 2022, Basaltsee Südbruch (Forst, Pfalz)
This is the smaller, more accessible lake that emerged after the basalt quarries near Forst were abandoned in the 1980s. Today it's a nature reserve, so you'd better avoid swimming here. It's definitely worth seeing.

Here stands Ritterstein No. 260. It is one of over 300 Rittersteine (memorial stones) erected by the Palatinate Forest Association (PWV) and bears the inscription "Heidenlöcher – Refuge Castle 9th-10th Century." It marks the remains of a refuge castle that served as protection against the warring Normans and Hungarians. Today, the foundations of two gate structures, 65 stone houses, and a 450-meter-long curtain wall are still preserved. The inner of the two adjoining dry-stone walls served as a parapet walk. - Source: Information panels on site A little further to the right of this Ritterstein are the foundations of one of the gate structures. The refuge castle, or rather its remains, can be entered through the two gate structures. The curtain wall can be easily walked along (with minor exceptions): either on top of the wall or along its inner side – and the remains of many stone houses can be seen along the way. Without Komoot, it is easy to get lost here: Therefore, it is best to follow the "Palatinate Wine Trail" hiking signs!

In contrast to the (red) quarries in the middle of the Palatinate Forest, sandstone on the Haardt edge is white and yellow! Many of the inscriptions/pictures that can be found on the walls are explained on a beautiful information board and marked with red arrows on the walls of the quarry. Horse pictures are particularly easy to recognize. These rock paintings come from the Roman legionnaires who worked in the quarry here. Also carved into the stone: a large memorial plaque for the Bad Dürkheim soldiers who died in World War I and all their names.

Impressive ruin - due to the well-preserved ruin, it is easy to get an idea of the former monastery.

A great destination. An old quarry and a small lake provide a great backdrop.

Very beautiful, well-preserved monastery ruins near Bad Dürkheim. The Limburg Monastery (after its collapse often also called the Limburg Monastery Ruins, once the Abbey of the Holy Cross or Limburg Monastery on the Haardt) is a former Benedictine abbey that existed from the 11th century until the Reformation. It is located on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in the area of the Rhineland-Palatinate district town of Bad Dürkheim. The Romanesque-style complex now only exists as a ruin. It is one of the largest and most important monuments of early Salian architecture. The Limburg Monastery Ruins are located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, exposed above the south bank of a left tributary of the Rhine, the Isenach, which breaks through the Haardt, the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, to the west of Bad Dürkheim and first enters the hilly country on the German Wine Route, then the Rhine plain. The complex is located on today's Limburgberg, which is 260.5 m high, northeast of the summit slightly below at a height of 245 to 250 m.[4] Outside the monastery grounds is the Haardtrand - Am Limburgberg nature reserve, founded in 1989 and covering around 12 hectares (area number: NSG-7332-109, World Database on Protected Areas - Haardtrand - Am Limburgberg The Limburg can be reached on foot via the Bad Dürkheim districts of Grethen and Hausen, and by car via the Seebach district. The Heidenlöcher near Deidesheim: About 2.5 km northwest of Deidesheim are the so-called Heidenlöcher on the summit of the Kirchberg or Martenberg. They were built in the 9th and 10th centuries as a refuge to protect against the raids of the Normans or Hungarians. A 450 m long dry wall, interrupted by two gates, moves around an area on which the foundations of 65 houses of different sizes were found.

Swimming is not so good anymore, there are many aquatic plants and the water level has dropped about a meter in the last two dry summers. (Moreover, swimming is forbidden here) It's still good for cooling your feet, and the place is also very interesting for geologists. The quarry was operated at two balsa chimneys, which had pushed through the red sandstone layers.
