The fountain was created in 1913 by the Munich sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand and erected in 1921. It is made of shell limestone and is designed as a heptagonal dome. On top of the fountain stands Siegfried with his sword, which represents the scene of the dragon slayer from the legend.

In addition to the posting of the theses in 1517, the main historical reason for erecting the monument was Luther's role at the Diet of Worms in 1521, when he defended his theses before Emperor Charles V. In addition to Rietschel, who came up with the overall design, his students included Adolf von Donndorf (statues of Waldus, Savonarola, Reuchlin, Friedrich the Wise and Magdeburg), Johannes Schilling (statue of the personified city of Speyer) and Gustav Adolph Kietz (statues of Hus , Melanchthon, Philipp the Magnanimous and Augsburg) and the architect Hermann Nicolai, a student of Gottfried Semper, were involved in the design of the monument. It was cast in the art foundry Lauchhammer. Rietschel's statue of Luther in the center of the memorial was influential in depicting Luther in the late 19th century and was cast for numerous Luther memorials in Central Europe and North America.

The Siegfried Fountain is a listed fountain in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Worms. It is reminiscent of Siegfried the dragon slayer, one of the main characters in the Nibelungen saga.
