On the archway of Sörgenloch Castle is the coat of arms of Barons Köth von Wanscheid from the 18th century. The history of Sörgenloch Castle goes back to the 12th century. At that time, the place was owned by the St. Alban Monastery in Mainz and was more of an estate with a few residential buildings than a real town as we know it today. The estate's task was to supply the monastery with food and money through the so-called "tithe". However, it is unknown who managed the estate on behalf of the monastery. The place attracted attention around the same time that Sörgenloch Castle was built. At that time, coins and vessels from the Iron Age and antiquity were found. The Celts and the Romans had also already settled here. The place around Sörgenloch Castle gained economic importance as an important place of pilgrimage in the 17th century. The money of the pilgrims who came to visit was also responsible for the fact that a simple manor house could be turned into the castle we see today a good 100 years later. The small Renaissance-style castle was built by the Köth-Wanscheid family, who ruled the town in the 18th century. Sörgenloch Castle is no longer owned by the local lords, but is run privately as a restaurant. Also part of the castle, but now independent, are the Catholic rectory and a second, former castle.

The customs tower was built around the year 1000 as a pass barrier on the road between Mainz and Bad Kreuznach! The name goes back to a legend of Saint Ursula of Cologne! On her way back from a pilgrimage to Rome, she crossed the Selz here with her entourage of 11,000 virgins. In the hope that another 11,000 virgins would follow the same path, the Schnorressänger from Elsheim took over the sponsorship in 2006.

The Protestant castle church, formerly St. Wigbert's, is part of one of the best-preserved church fortifications in southern and western Germany. The Romanesque church tower from the early 12th century, with its late Gothic battlements and oriel turret, dominates the three-aisled church building. Its varying roof heights also reflect the various construction phases of the first half of the 15th century. The fortified west front with its large tracery window was completed in 1450. Inside, the choir still contains many elements of the pre-Reformation period. A colorful stained glass window depicts the Adoration of the Magi, the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, and saints. It is a unique example of stained glass on the Middle Rhine around 1400. The late Gothic vaults are decorated with magnificent keystones and painted floral ornaments. Many tombstones testify to the wealth, influence, and self-confidence of the former local aristocratic families. The facade of a silent organ with rich carvings dates back to the 18th century.

From here, you have a magnificent view in both directions, into the Selz Valley and to the north as far as the Rhine and the Rheingau. The current building complex dates from the late 18th to the 20th century. Henn suggests that a Roman estate, a villa rustica, may well have stood on this site, even though no archaeological traces of it have yet been found. Westerhaus Castle is the largest estate in Rheinhessen. It is on the Westerberg near Großwinternheim near Ingelheim am Rhein. Today it is a well-known VDP winery and is run by the fourth generation. The vineyards consist of ancient shell limestone rocks and the wine cellar of the winery is carved into the mountain, which looks like a stalactite cave, but is ideal for the wine. The castle is on the Hiwweltour Westerberg. https://www.komoot.de/tour/435296837/annotate/highlights

Westerhaus Castle is located on the Westerberg hill and is considered the largest estate in Rheinhessen. The estate's owners, Ivonne and Johannes Graf von Schönburg, are the fourth generation to run the business. You can register for a wine tasting or take home a bottle of wine as a souvenir. More information about the winery can be found here: https://www.schloss-westerhaus.de.

Westerhaus Castle is the largest estate in Rheinhessen. It stands on the Westerberg near Großwinternheim near Ingelheim am Rhein. In 1408 there is a first documented mention of a hus und ecker uff deme Westirberge. It is assumed that the actual founding dates back a long time and is related to the founding of Charlemagne's imperial palace in Ingelheim in the 8th century. The General Directorate for Cultural Heritage assigns the first mention in its list of cultural monuments in Ingelheim am Rhein to the year 1190. The Counts of Bolanden and Ingelheim resided in Westerhaus Castle for over 600 years. As a fiefdom of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Westerhaus Castle was owned by the Counts of Ingelheim for over 400 years until it was expropriated by French revolutionary troops at the beginning of the 19th century. On October 4, 1900, Heinrich Opel from Rüsselsheim, one of Adam Opel's five sons, acquired the property to expand it into a model estate. The property includes a stud with a striking riding hall. In the 1930s Irmgard von Opel was probably the best rider in the world in military and jumping saddles at the time. Source: Wikipedia

This Hiwweltour is a nice and pleasant tour that is fun. Varied with small highlights, it is very beautiful, especially in autumn. The Westerhaus Castle not Westerburg is part of it.
