The current tower was built from local wood between 1973 and 1975 for DM 60,000 and was inaugurated on May 1, 1975. The Salzkopf Tower had to be closed in 1997 because of considerable damage caused by carpenter ants feeding on supporting pillars. On the initiative of the Bingen CDU parliamentary group leader Franz Roos, the Salzkopfturm was able to be renovated, preserved and reopened in the years that followed. After his death in 2006, the tower was renamed the Salzkopfturm Franz Roos by the Bingen city council. In the years 2008 and 2009 further renovation measures took place due to static problems. The Salzkopfturm is freely accessible and has an open, 19.4 m high viewing platform, to which a total of 93 steps[3] of a wooden staircase lead.
