The sheep graze on the dikes in the Altes Land region to help with dike stabilization and maintenance. As they graze, they act as natural lawnmowers, and their hooves compact the soil, strengthening the turf and protecting the dike from erosion. Furthermore, the sheep's hooves fill in mouse holes and mole tunnels, which could otherwise lead to dike undermining during floods. The sheep keep the grass short, promoting deeper and stronger root development. This robust root system protects the dike from the force of the water. Soil compaction: the sheep's hooves firm the soil, stabilizing the dike. The compacted turf prevents erosion, and the sheep actively fill in mouse and mole holes. The sheep provide natural landscape maintenance, serving as a cost-effective alternative to mechanical maintenance and ensuring a uniform, dense turf.

A fantastic hiking and cycling trail leads along here, amidst beautiful nature. The sheep are lying around on the paths and won't budge 😀 so you sometimes have to get off your bike 😏. Otherwise, a wonderful tour that I highly recommend 👍🏻.

I occasionally drive through this area. In this case, on my tour: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/2450927699 The photos I've attached show the sheep. At that time, bluetongue disease was rampant. And a covered rest area. It was new at the time.

I passed by here on September 6, 2025, on my "Test Drive Planet Trail" tour. On several tours, which I repeat occasionally, I pass by the Inland Elbe. It's always beautiful—especially with a tailwind.

You can also cycle well in front of the dike, although not as fast as on asphalt.

The path on the land side of the dike is mostly free of sheep and is generally of better quality.
