7月 27, 2025, Oberburg Ulmen
The lower castle has completely disappeared. You can still see the beginning of the ring that connected the lower castle and the Ulmen city wall, a two-story outer wall of the palace, as well as a cistern and some foundation walls of other buildings. The old part of Ulmen Castle was built around 1074 AD and likely rests on the remains of a Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages, Ulmen Castle was further expanded and divided into the upper castle, whose remains of the walls still exist, and the lower castle, which extended to the banks of the maar river. Two knightly families lived in the castle, which is believed to have never been attacked or destroyed until 1673 due to its size. Only the Sun King's troops succeeded. It was rebuilt, but fell again in 1689 during the War of the Succession. However, Ulmen Castle was also rebuilt this time, with only the city wall being abandoned. With the invasion of Napoleon's soldiers, Ulmen also became French and later Prussian. The empty castle, whose last descendant died in 1801, was auctioned to a merchant from Cochem, who sold it as a quarry. When a devastating fire burned Ulmen to the ground in the 19th century, the residents of Ulmen rebuilt their houses with stones from the castle. That's why you can still see a coat of arms on some of the stables today. It wasn't until the early twentieth century that Ulmen Castle was declared a listed building and became the property of the municipality of Ulmen. The castle is always freely accessible.

As always, castle ruins have a strong attraction for me. I can hardly escape their magic.

🌲Nice photo motif in the middle of beautiful nature 🌳🎨📸 Freely accessible. Had our snack here 🥪🥐🥖 🏰The castle stands on an elevation approx. 355 meters above NHN and thus a good 20 meters above the valley floor of the Ahbach, which runs a few meters further east 🌊 near the state road 70. Extensive renovation work took place in 2004-2006.

A historic castle ruin whose origins are unknown. Only a document from the year 1341 confirms its proven age. I found this ruin very impressive.

A very beautiful castle above a great little town. Restorations are already well advanced. Definitely worth a visit

Even if the castle cannot be visited because it is privately owned, its location high above the village of Kerpen is very impressive and gives the beautiful village a certain charm. Kerpen Castle is a so-called spur castle, which lies on a rock or mountain spur, but below the hilltop or the mountain peak, unlike the summit castle, and thus steeply above the valley. It is characterized by a terrain formation that slopes steeply on at least two sides. The place is practically at the feet of the castle. The former owner and famous Eifel painter Fritz von Wille was buried on a hill behind the castle in 1941. For a long time afterwards, it served first as a training center and finally as a rural school center; from 2016 to 2018, refugees were accommodated here. The castle currently belongs to an entrepreneurial family from Bonn and has since been used only for private residential purposes.

When you think of Nürburg, you only think of fast cars and tight corners? Then you're not familiar with the castle ruins of the same name. Nürburg was founded before 1166, probably by the Counts of Are. Characteristic slate-covered conical roofs mark the silhouette of the castle, visible from afar. Not only the view from the mighty keep is worth a visit, but also the impressive remains of the former castle complex, which was expanded in several so-called "growth rings." You can find more detailed information about Nürburg here: https://kulturerbe-eifel-mosel.de/nuerburg

The Nürburg is the highest castle in Rhineland-Palatinate (676.5 m above sea level). It was built on a basalt, weathered volcanic vent. The basalt rock gave the mountain and the castle their name: Mons Nore, the black mountain. He also supplied the building materials for the castle. When the weather is clear, the keep (39 m high) offers a fantastic panoramic view of the entire Eifel, but also of the heart of the “Green Hell”, the Nordschleife, which winds its way through the woods around the castle.

The upper castle was built on a slope above the Ulmen maar, while the lower castle (also called lower castle) was adjacent but below it. The exact time of construction is not known, but it is assumed that the upper castle was built around the year 1000. It was first mentioned in a document in 1074. The ruins of the upper castle are owned by the municipality of Ulmen and in 1913 were listed as a historical monument. It is freely accessible and there are regular events on its premises, including an annual medieval market on the last weekend in June. Source: Wikipedia

A closer look at the castle is definitely worthwhile on a hike through the historic castle town of Kerpen (Eifel). As the former place of work or domicile of the (perhaps most famous) Eifel painter Fritz von Wille, it is also an important stop for those interested in culture.

12月 20, 2020, Dreimühlen Castle Ruins
The castle is located at 380 m above sea level. NHN. The facility stands on a hill made of tuff to the left (west) of the Ahbach. Little is known about the history of the castle from written sources. Nothing is known about the appearance of the original castle complex. The remnants of the Dreimühlen house, which are only small today, essentially consist of a quarry stone wall that still towers a few meters. The facility is neither inhabited nor managed and is freely accessible at all times. Due to the poor state of preservation, a visit is actually only worthwhile in connection with the neighboring Dreimühlen waterfall, which was named after the ruin, or for real castle enthusiasts. Through the Ahbach valley in the immediate vicinity of the ruin, marked hiking trails lead, among other things, the Geo- Hillesheim path and the Eifel crime thriller hiking trail. Furthermore, the Kalkeifel cycle path and the mineral spring route (with a connection to the Ahr cycle path in the north) run as sections of a cycle network.

A very beautiful castle, very impressive and certainly the landmark of Kerpen. The castle cannot be visited as it is privately owned, but that is completely fine, you don't have to visit every castle. It's great to hike around the castle and it's also fun to just see the castle.

The castle in Ahbachtal was already considered destroyed in 1521, around 200 years after its construction in the 14th century at the intersection of the four major territories of Cologne, Jülich, Luxembourg and Trier, and was not rebuilt due to its lack of strategic importance.

From here you have a wonderful view of the maar and the town of Ulmen. The Ulmener Maar is considered to be the youngest maar in the Eifel; it was only created after the eruption of the Laacher See volcano. The meromictic lake is up to 37 meters deep and is surrounded by an average 20 meter high wall made of tuff rock, which was formed from the ejecta of the former volcano. On the southern edge of the wall are the ruins of a knight's castle from the 11th century.
