The history of Pottenstein can be traced back to the first documented mention in 918. Pottenstein Castle was built around 1060 by Count Boto von Pottenstein (1028–1104; Aribone). In 1323 the place received city rights. The city of Pottenstein was the upper bailiff of the Bamberg monastery. In a town fire in 1736, 60 houses were destroyed and the town church was damaged. Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. The Neideck ruin greets the Wiesenttal from an exposed rock spur. The remains of the outer and inner outer bailey and the main castle with its residential tower show the boldness and art of medieval fortifications. The mighty facility was first documented in 1219 and was the headquarters of the extended Jurassic Territory of the Schlüsselberger. The castle has been a ruin since its destruction in the Second Margrave War (1553).
