Beautiful castle complex, the best preserved castle complex in the Fichtel Mountains. It secured the Schirnding pass, which was once important for traffic and strategy, and was first mentioned in 1222.

Very well maintained facility and beautifully modernized.

I deviated from the Geoweg to see the ponds. That wasn't a mistake! The paths are natural and there are always benches for a break. The castle is impressive, as you wouldn't expect it at all when driving through the village on the main road.

A castle from the time when hammering ore brought wealth

The ecological educational center, Öbi for short, which has been located in Hohenberg Castle since 1996, has been an environmental station from the very beginning. There are now 63 environmental stations in Bavaria and nine in Upper Franconia. The focus in Hohenberg is on German-Czech encounters and nature experiences for people with and without disabilities.

The St. Elisabeth Church was first mentioned in documents in 1262. The "Freistatt" columns next to the church are evidence of a historically prominent place of legal security in ancient times. The strong, solidly built bell tower with its Italian dome and lantern dominates. The bright ringing of the bells can be heard far into the Eger Valley and across the border to Bohemia.
