9月 3, 2023, Ahrweiler Old Town
In the historic town of Ahrweiler, an old custom has been preserved over the centuries. The city consists of four districts, the so-called Huts. In earlier times, these guards organized the guarding of the city wall and the pastures around it. Today, the Hut communities have taken on other tasks, such as looking after senior citizens or cultural tasks. One of these four Huts in Ahrweiler is the Ahrhut and the center of this district is the Ahrhutstrasse. We introduce the street and the tradition of the Ahrhut community. It also shows that Ahrhutstrasse, with the mighty Ahrtor, is not only rich in history, but also a very lively shopping street. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants on the street and there is always something going on during the day. Friedhelm Koll's shop is a very special shop. He sells more than 100 types of spices, by the gram. It is shops like this that give Ahrhutstrasse its special charm. And the houses with tradition, such as the Coels winery. It is the last wine-growing business in the Ahrhutstrasse and yet, or perhaps because of that, it is particularly successful. And the future of the winery is already secured because the next generation has just taken over. Source: https://www.swr Fernsehen.de/landesschau-rp/hierzuland/broadcastcontrib-swr-6178.html

The path is tough, but so is the view. The Landskrone is also visible from afar, for orientation. Only on New Year's Eve should you think twice whether you want to go here... because many people have the idea, fireworks are sometimes shot across, and if something happens then it could take a while for help to arrive (fortunately that didn't happen to us back then).

The climb to Saffenburg is worth it: Not only does the perfect view over Mayschuss and its vineyards await you here, you can also reward yourself with a delicious glass of wine at any time. Next to the refuge there is a wine vending machine with delicious white, rosé and red wines as well as grape juice and water. Glasses are also available for loan. Payment is only possible cashless.

Very beautiful city center with the half-timbered houses and the well-preserved city fortifications from the Middle Ages. >> Ahrweiler << - the older of the two districts, was first mentioned as >> Ahrwilere << in the year 893 in a goods list of the Prüm Abbey. This abbey had large possessions in Ahrweiler. Until 1100 Ahrweiler belonged to the Argau. from 1100 - 1246 sovereignty was exercised by the Counts of Are; From them it passed in 1246 to the Counts of Hochstaden of the Archbishopric of Cologne, who remained rulers until 1794. Archbishop Konrad von Are-Hochstaden, who confirmed Ahrweiler's city rights in 1248, made the city, together with Bonn, Neuss and Andernach, co-capital of Electoral Cologne. In keeping with this political and strategic importance, the sovereign had Ahrweiler fortified with a fortification that is still worth seeing today. The moats, city walls, gates and towers from the 13th century are almost completely preserved today. During the Thirty Years' War (1633, 1642, 1646) the city was besieged, looted and pillaged by enemies; During the 3rd French War of Robbery on May 1, 1689, all but 10 houses were completely destroyed. It took years for the reconstruction to take place. From 1794 - 1814 Ahrweiler was under French rule, which was followed by belonging to Prussia from 1815 - 1945. Ahrweiler had to endure the last enemy attacks in 1044 and 1945. The bombing left the southern part of the city center completely in ruins. But reconstruction took place quickly. Anyone who visits Ahrweiler as a lover of antiquity will be particularly impressed by the St. Laurentius parish church (1269) - one of the first Gothic hall churches in the Rhineland - and the excavation work on the recently discovered probably second largest Roman villa north of the Alps. The summit of the Landskrone is a nature reserve. On the ruins there is a flat meadow area (former restaurant), a hut where you can take shelter in stormy weather, a few benches, parts of the ruins and a summit cross. The view is roughly the same as from the chapel. Overall, a nice spacious place

A fantastic view of the Ahr valley towards Bad Neuenahr; The Rosary Church is striking; and Ahrweiler behind it. In the foreground is the Ahrtalbrücke (A61) with a height of 55 meters - underneath is the Appolinarsquelle with the neighboring bottling plant.

Very beautiful castle ruins with a view of the Ahr valley with Mayschoß and Rech. What a beautiful castle that was in the Middle Ages! The Saffenburg is derived from the old family of the Counts of Saffenberg. The name Saffenberg first appears in 1081. As a witness, Count Adalbert von Saffenberg signed a document from the Elector of Cologne, whose liege he was. Different noble families as owners Later, Adalbert's descendants were the sole owners. Numerous different noble families followed them as owners: In 1424 the complex came to the Counts of Virneburg and, after their extinction, to the Counts Manderscheid-Schleiden, who were followed by the Counts of Marck-Schleiden in 1593. Largest hilltop castle in the Ahr Valley If you now take into account the poor, narrow Ahr roads, where heavy siege artillery could not be brought to the surrounding mountains anywhere, it becomes clear that even centuries after the invention of gunpowder, the Saffenburg retained its military importance. Over the course of its history, the Saffenburg has been occupied several times by various foreign powers. This mostly happened bloodlessly; only once was the castle taken by enemy troops in battle. In December 1632, Swedish mercenaries under General Wolf Heinrich von Baudissin, coming from the Westerwald, conquered the cities of Linz, Remagen and Andernach, among others. Very beautifully situated castle ruins above the village of Altenahr. From the castle you have a beautiful view of Altenahr and the Ahr valley. Absolutely worth seeing! Foundation, expansion and demolition: The castle was built by Theoderich von Are at the beginning of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1121. In 1714 the castle was demolished and has been a ruin ever since. In between there are six centuries of history with changing castle lords. In the 12th century Are Castle was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Are. In the middle of the 13th century the Cologne Church took possession of it: in 1246 Count Friedrich von Are-Hochstaden gave the castle and the counties to his brother Konrad von Hochstaden. Konrad von Hochstaden was Archbishop of Cologne at the time. The castle became the seat of the Altenahr office. In this way the Cologne Archbishops consolidated their claim to power in the Ahr valley. They also used the keep as a prison for undesirable enemies of the state. Since its construction, the complex has been repeatedly expanded and extended over time, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries. As owners of the castle, the Archbishops of Cologne repeatedly mortgaged the complex. However, as the mortgagees often did not live in the castle themselves, a kind of backlog of renovations occurred. As a result, with a few exceptions, the condition of the castle continued to deteriorate until the 17th century, because the changing lords of the castle did not take sufficient care of the restoration and maintenance of the castle. In 1690, French troops invaded the territory and besieged the castle for nine months. The town of Altenahr lay in ruins, and the castle was also badly damaged. In the following 16 years, the occupiers changed several times. However, the major damage caused by siege and bombardment was not repaired. In the War of the Spanish Succession, Cologne troops took over Are Castle again in 1706. After the Peace of Rastatt, the Cologne Archbishop and Elector Joseph Clemens finally had the castle blown up. Parts of the destroyed castle were used as building material for a new office building in Ahrweiler. The castle has been a ruin since 1714. The small but very nice place Ahrweiler is great as a starting point for a tour on foot or by bike. Also highly recommended is a visit to the former government bunker.

In the former castle courtyard of the ruin there is a rest area. In front of the viewing pavilion you have a great 360 ° view over Altenahr, the NSG Langfigtal, the Teufelsloch and the steep rocks of the Ahr mountains ...
