Small but nice city center. The Oettinger beer here is much better than its reputation

The baroque palace of the princely family zu Oettingen-Spielberg is located in Oettingen. Ever since the Oettingen noble family was first mentioned in a document in 1141, Oettingen has always been the seat of government for the counts and princes. The residential palace was built in the years 1679-1687 a good 30 years after the 30-year war.

Count Anton Karl von Oettingen-Wallerstein had the Wallerstein plague column erected by the sculptor Johann Georg Bschorer from Oberndorf in 1722-1725, based on the model of Bohemian plague columns and the Viennese plague column on the Graben. The rich figurative decoration of the column shows St. Mary and St. Rochus, Sebastian and Anthony of Padua. In 2006, the plague column was completely renovated by master stone sculptor and stone restorer Franz Josef Wittner.

Wallerstein is a market town in the Swabian district of Donau-Ries and the seat of the Wallerstein administrative community. The plague column is Wallerstein's landmark. Plague columns are memorials that commemorate the time of the plague or were donated as thanks for its extinction.

The residential palace was built between 1679 and 1687 by the Württemberg master builder Mathias Weiß. Although the facade dates from the High Baroque period, it contains elements of the Italian Renaissance. The large hall with its magnificent Schmuzer stucco and the magnificently stuccoed reception rooms on the 2nd floor are particularly worth seeing. The Oettinger Residenz concerts take place in the hall from spring to autumn. Interested parties can also take part in the regular castle tours.
