Ointment Kiln Ointment or lubricating wood distillation refers to the dry distillation of resinous wood, primarily pine stumps. The wood was layered inside the kiln as so-called "pine sticks" (short pieces of wood). After closing the "blade," a controlled fire was lit in the combustion chamber between the inner and outer casings for three days. This process separated the wood into its constituent substances. After approximately six hours of burning, tar water appeared in the outlet pipe, which was used to swell hides during tanning. Next, the yellowish, thick pine oil flowed out, which was processed into chemical and pharmaceutical products. Finally, brown tar flowed out, which was used as axle grease and, after further thickening, as pitch in shipbuilding. After the kiln cooled, the discharge hole was opened, and the large quantity of charcoal produced was removed.

Completely new to me, but very interesting

On the Tonbachsteig you will come across two ointment ovens. Next to it is a detailed information board showing everything that was made with the oven at the time.

In earlier times, these buildings were used to produce cart ointments and tar oils. The resinous logs were heated so much that the resin ran out and could then be processed into tar water, pine oil, cart grease, wood tar and pitch. Until the 19th century, there were a large number of such ointment ovens in the surrounding forests.
