1月 4, 2026, Barfüßerkirche Ruins, Erfurt
The Franciscans (called "Barefoot Friars" because of their bare feet) settled in Erfurt as early as 1224 – it was one of their first establishments in the German-speaking world. Construction of the present church began after a city fire in 1291. The chancel was consecrated in 1316, while the nave was not completed until the early 15th century. The church is a three-aisled basilica with pillars. Typical of the mendicant order is the absence of a grand west tower; instead, it has a slender roof lantern (and a small tower on the north side).

The road surface is no longer ideal for fast descents. It's better for climbing.

Beautiful, spacious park on the Saale. Great for running in winter, probably very busy in summer.

3月 19, 2023, Barfüßerkirche Ruins, Erfurt
The name of the church, which was destroyed in 1944, derives from the former residents of the Barefoot Church: the Franciscans. Members of the Franciscan order were often colloquially called "barefooters". Tip: There are great events here, including great theater performances

1月 31, 2023, Barfüßerkirche Ruins, Erfurt
In the course of the Reformation, the church became the parish church of the protestant barefoot community in 1525. Martin Luther preached here on October 11, 1529. The monastery buildings to the north of the church were demolished in the Swedish period from 1641 to 1648 and used to build a bastion of the city fortifications. A lightning strike in 1838 damaged the nave and necessitated extensive restoration from 1842 to 1852. After that, the barefoot church served as Erfurt's protestant garrison church. Since August 24, 1874, name plaques have commemorated all soldiers who died as members of the Erfurt regiments in the wars of unification.[8] Around 1925 Lyonel Feininger painted several pictures of the Barefoot Church, one of which is kept in the Anger Museum in Erfurt and another in the State Gallery in Stuttgart. In the course of renovation work by Feininger's student Theo Kellner in 1938, the ceiling painting by Charles Crodel was destroyed in 1944. From 1943 onwards, during the Second World War, the movable and transportable art objects of the church and the valuable stained glass from 1230/1240 were secured by outsourcing. The glass windows were placed in the cellar vault under the cathedral crypt. The winged altar was provisionally protected by an on-site enclosure.[9] On November 27, 1944, on the night of Totensonntag, the church, as well as the neighboring residential area and the vicarage, were hit by an air mine when several British mosquito bombers attacked Erfurt.[10] The nave was destroyed and the high choir badly damaged. The clearing work and the salvage of valuable architectural parts took place under the difficult war and post-war conditions. The partially destroyed pews of the church were burned down by the freezing population in the emergency winter of 1945. On Ascension Day 1957, a service was celebrated again for the first time in the high choir, which had been repaired since 1950 and was separated from the destroyed nave by a wall. The remains of the stained glass from six windows (1230/1240) were inserted into the tracery of three windows on a smaller area. The high altar from 1445, which was freed from its wall and restored, was put back into operation.[11][12] The remains of the nave could only be secured structurally. Source: Wikipedia
