The Gries Dam is located on the Salzach River in the Salzburg region, near the town of Gries. Its primary purpose is to control floodwaters, regulate the water profile, and ensure a reliable water supply in the region. The facility marks an important section of the river profile where the Salzach River is shaped by human intervention to provide protection against flooding and secure usable areas. Controlled water outlets regulate the discharge window, thereby stabilizing water levels in the upper catchment areas. In many cases, the dam and lock work hand in hand: During floods, more water is retained, while during dry periods, water can be released in a targeted manner to supply downstream canals, river branches, and irrigation areas.
