Beautiful square and central starting point for a city tour. Underground parking garage available under the square. The Kornmarkt came into being in the 16th century. The old hospital was previously located on this site. In 1551 the buildings were transferred to the university. However, they were in such bad condition that the university could not use them. In 1557, the city council submitted a request to Elector Ottheinrich, in which he asked for permission to demolish the former hospital building and set up a milk and cabbage market on the site. The request was granted. The milk and cabbage market that subsequently emerged was also called the New Market to distinguish it from the older market square at the Heiliggeistkirche. The term Kornmarkt only became established in the late 17th century. Today the Kornmarkt is adorned with the Mother of God fountain. The Palais Graimberg can also be seen at the south-east corner of the square. In the west, the Kornmarkt is delimited by the successor building to the Prinz Carl, Heidelberg's former luxury hotel. The Kornmarkt is a square in the old town of Heidelberg not far from the market square. The main street runs to the north of the Kornmarkt, to the south are Ingrimstrasse and Karlstrasse. The Burgweg, which leads to the Heidelberg Castle, begins south of the Kornmarkt.
