As early as Roman times, an important long-distance connection from Strasbourg to Constance ran through the city area and continued to operate under Frankish rule. The Hornberg rule was given as a fief to Adalbert von Ellerbach by Henry IV around 1084, who from then on called himself von Hornberg. Around 1200 there was a division among the heirs, and the southern part became the Triberg estate. The castle, beneath which the later town of Hornberg developed, was built at this time. The city was sold into the hands of the Württembergers, for whom this area represented an important base on the way to their Alsatian possessions and the county of Mömpelgard. Sales began in 1423 and were completed about two decades later. In the middle of the 15th century the city became the seat of a bailiff's office. In the border agreement between the Kingdom of Würtemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden,[3] which was concluded in Paris on October 2, 1810, several “staffs” of the Hornberg Oberamt, including Hornberg, the town of Schiltach and the municipalities of Gutach and Kirnbach, came to the Grand Duchy Bathe.
