Kirnburg Castle is situated at 382 meters above sea level on the mountain of the same name (Kurinberc since 1219) above Bleichheim, overlooking the confluence of the Kirnbach stream and the Bleiche valley. The castle served as the administrative center of the Üsenberg and later Further Austrian lordships of Kenzingen and Kürnberg. Rudolf I of Üsenberg built Kirnburg Castle in the early 13th century. The 60 x 80 meter area of the upper castle and its outer bailey is protected to the south by several dry moats. Access to the fortifications was once via this spur. The oldest element of the castle is the square tower, built shortly after 1200 from rusticated ashlar blocks. The original complex also included a curtain wall and a gatehouse, in which a document was issued in 1219. In 1352, Friedrich of Üsenberg sold the castle to Heinrich IV of Hachberg. The shield wall and other structures were built during this period. In 1515, it came into the possession of Knight Wolf von Hürnheim – dilapidated and uninhabitable.
