The river is 15.7 km long and has a height difference of 10 meters. It originates north of Aukrug-Innien from the confluence of the Buckener Au and Fuhlenau, with the Buckener Au being the longer source. The Bünzau is a sand-covered lowland stream.[1] Important tributaries are the Höllenau and Bredenbek. The Bünzau was navigable for the barges common at the time until around 1870. This was used to transport timber from Aukrug south to the Stör and further to the Elbe. In 2005, traces of a beaver were first found in the Bünzau.

Along the Bünzau there is a beautiful forest, partly planted with beech trees. You can hike on beautiful forest paths above the Bünzau. This meanders between meadows and pastures.

Brick was used as a building material. By alternating glazed and unglazed stones as well as shaped stones, various ornaments were created. Mosaics are added to the central gable and the upper floor parapets.

The old town hall of Neumünster is located in the city center on Großflecken and has been a listed building since 1983. The building, which was built between 1898 and 1900 in the neo-Gothic style, was expanded several times with additions.

In the Aukrug Nature Park, the Bünzau stands out as a natural, wild river, some with sandy shores.

At the end of the 19th century, Neumünster, as an up-and-coming industrial city, needed a new town hall, which was built in 1900 in the neo-Gothic style on Großflecken.
