The gardens surrounding the residential palace in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, are known as "Blooming Baroque." Since 1959, the East Garden has also housed the Fairy Tale Garden, depicting over 40 fairy tale scenes. The Fairy Tale Garden was founded in 1959 on the initiative of Albert Schöchle, who, while shopping for animals in 1957, happened upon the Dutch Fairy Tale Forest in what is now the Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel, near Tilburg. Since Schöchle was looking for a new attraction for the park, he enthusiastically embraced the idea, but he didn't anticipate how difficult it would be to convince the supervisory board members in Ludwigsburg of the project's merits. He finally succeeded through a joint visit to the Dutch Fairy Tale Garden, which he deliberately scheduled for a Sunday; the large crowds of visitors there on that day convinced him.

The south side forms the main entrance area of the entire garden: A wide access path is interrupted by a circular lake. To the left and right are areas designed in the style of a French Baroque garden. - In the north garden, facing Favorite Palace, are various terraces and a Baroque parterre surrounding a basin with a central fountain. Aviaries with exotic birds are also located there. - The English-style east garden consists of two parts. In the upper part is the Schüsselesee (Bowl Lake), around which historic play equipment such as a carousel, swings, a boat swing, and bowling lanes are arranged. An antique aqueduct, a Mediterranean vineyard, and a kangaroo house with an enclosure have also been built there. A monument to the Ludwigsburg theologian David Friedrich Strauss was erected here at the beginning of the 20th century. The Sardinian Garden is a 150 x 30 meter free-flight aviary, which houses flamingos, ibises, storks, and mallards, among other birds, and is decorated with typical Mediterranean plants. Flower shows and art exhibitions are held in the orangery. The 30-meter-long Posilippo Tunnel was built in 1801 as a step-free connection to the lower orchard.

From March 21 to December 7, 2025, the park is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Ticket office opening hours: Main entrance Schorndorfer Straße & Entrance Hinterer Schlosshof: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, public holidays & bridge days: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Built between 1717 and 1723 according to the plans of the ducal court architect Donato Giuseppe Frisoni, the palace was connected to the Residenzschloss (Residenz Palace) via an avenue. It was intended to be both an eye-catcher and a vantage point. Two sweeping staircases lead up to the impressive main floor, where the ballroom and the smaller rooms are located. A roof terrace with four small towers offered a wonderful view over the Tiergarten, today's Favoritepark.

The castle ruins from the 13th century are idyllically nestled in the vineyards. From there you have a panoramic view of the vineyards and the Neckar.

I went there with my parents as a child, with friends as a teenager, and now I like to visit it again and again, even on my bike, especially when there are special exhibitions, e.g. pumpkin season, which is very nice.
