Winsen is a beautiful little town.

I just suggested to Komoot that they rename the highlight of the pond system to Schlossteich Winsen. Winsen Castle is located in the middle of the city on the northern edge of the castle park. South of the castle is a beautiful castle pond. The castle in Winsen was first mentioned in documents in 1299 and was probably built around 1230. Very nice castle, very few people in Hamburg know about this gem. One of the most beautiful Christmas markets in northern Germany also takes place on the Schloßwiese.

A very pretty castle surrounded by a beautiful castle park. Before the castle was built, there was already a castle on this site. It is not known when exactly it was built, but it was probably built around the year 1200.

Who better to guard the castle than this lioness?

In earlier years, lions and other predators were often and gladly placed as guardian figures in front of castles and mansions. The lioness in the Bergedorf Castle Park is much more recent and otherwise deviates from the usual forms of representation. She shows much less impressiveness than many of her male counterparts and also looks in the direction of the castle instead of watching in front of it. The granite sculpture shows simplified, flowing lines with rear legs set far back. Originally there was also a tiger by the same artist in the palace park next to the lioness. Hamburg's only surviving castle is in Bergedorf. However, queens or princes never lived here, but the Bergedorf Castle was a purely administrative building for the landlords, officials and later the Hamburg senators responsible for Bergedorf. The building was laid out as a moated castle on the Bille in the 13th century and was expanded and rebuilt over the centuries. It stands in the middle of a listed park and is the landmark of Bergedorf. Today it serves as a museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande.
