A very nice location

The buildings In the 14th century, the farms were surrounded by forests and swamps. They were gradually expanded by their owners into a fortified knight's seat. Today, Haag Castle consists of the former outer bailey and a forecourt to the north. The former manor house no longer exists. During the Spanish-Dutch War, the heavily fortified complex suffered from troops quartered there, who plundered it in 1584, partially demolished it and burned down the forecourt. In order to avoid further occupation, the magistrate of the city of Geldern turned to the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands, Alessandro Farnese, at the request of Baron Arnold von Boedberg, with the request to have the fortifications of Haag Castle demolished; with success, because the ramparts were torn down and the fortification walls demolished. Bloemersheim Castle (pronounced with a long "e") is a moated castle near Neukirchen-Vluyn, one of the most impressive castles in the Wesel district. Leyenburg Castle is located nearby. Dating from the late Middle Ages, the castle was acquired in 1802 by Friedrich Heinrich von der Leyen, a silk producer from Krefeld, from Friedrich August von Pelden (nicknamed Cloudt). It remains the ancestral seat of the Barons von der Leyen and the headquarters of an estate management company (with significant fruit sales and forestry operations). The castle (courtyard and gardens) is only open to the public during rare cultural events, but the rear side, facing the castle pond, can be easily viewed from a popular cycle path. An adventure playground for children.
