🏛️ History & Location Location: The prison is located at Abteiplatz 20. It is part of the former outbuildings that border the large square in front of the abbey church. Function: During the time of the Cistercian abbey, it served to imprison individuals who had violated monastic law or the order within the abbey's lands. For centuries, Kamp Abbey was a powerful landowner with its own lower court jurisdiction.

🏨 The former monastery prison is one of the most fascinating, yet often overlooked, parts of the Kamp monastery complex in Kamp-Lintfort. It serves as a reminder that monasteries possessed their own jurisdictions in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

This café and beer garden is highly recommended. Delicious, hearty food, just as you'd expect from a farm. You can sit in the rustic dining room or in one of the two garden areas.

Please note: at very high water the path is not accessible, because then the water of the Niers also covers the gravel path.

Beautiful shady path away from noise and traffic

A stately historic brick building, the street side features brick and plaster decorations. The side gateway features a reused Baroque capital. The basement contains cells from the monastic prison with a surrounding corridor. Abbot Franziskus Daniels built this courthouse around 1740, expecting the Elector of Cologne to grant him his own jurisdiction in the Kamp area.
