So, as requested (see above): what makes this HL stand out? First of all, it's just a regular bridge over the canal for pedestrians and cyclists, always well-frequented. It connects several real highlights – Schwansbell Castle and Castle Park, and the lakeside park with its beach and café. You can also simply cycle down to the canal and then continue from there. For people with a specific destination, it's also a great car-free connection from Altlünen to Horstmar or Dortmund-Nord. Hope this is helpful 🖖

This section of the route is a well-paved footpath and cycle path with a view of the species-rich Lippe and Lippeauen nature reserve. With a bit of luck, you might even see a kingfisher.

The former aristocratic residence Haus Rodenberg in Dortmund-Aplerbeck originally emerged from a medieval moated castle on the banks of the Emscher and was mentioned in a document as early as 1290. Of the former gardens, only the outer bailey island, the surrounding moats, the house pond and remnants of the wall surrounding the main garden remain. Today the park area is a public green space in the center of the Aplerbeck district.

Beautiful cycling and hiking trails. The Datteln-Hamm Canal is a federal waterway and branches off the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Datteln. From here it runs parallel to the Lippe on its south side in an easterly direction through Waltrop, Lünen, Bergkamen to Hamm. There it ends in the canal port of Schmehausen at the Westfalen power plant.

From here it is only a few meters to Schwansbell Castle in the north and Lake Horstmar with a café in the south.

Gas and coal are mainly transported via the canal to the power plants in Lünen, Bergkamen and Hamm. There are also several marinas for pleasure boats.

The Datteln-Hamm Canal near Lünen is very idyllic and has a total length of around 50 km from Hamm to Datteln.
