The Datteln-Hamm Canal (DHK) was completed in 1914, initially from the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK) to the Hamm city harbor. This section, between Hamm and Schmehausen, was added between 1926 and 1933. More information: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datteln-Hamm-Kanal

Very nice to cycle or walk/jog there. Very few people on the road and not as crowded as the canal paths in Pott.

There are wonderfully developed paths along the shore and if you are lucky you can also watch ships or boats on the water.
