The so-called Altenrode Manor was a farm belonging to the Heiningen Monastery since the 14th century. Located in Altenrode near Gielde in the municipality of Schladen-Werla, the estate is now run as an agricultural holding together with two neighboring farms in a partnership (GbR). The Altenrode settlement emerged as a result of a series of clearings initiated in Carolingian times, starting from Gielde, as part of a process of internal colonization of the Oderwald. Heiningen Monastery gradually acquired possessions of the settlement over the course of the Middle Ages, so that by 1321 the entire village lay within the monastery's boundaries and served as its farm.
