The Marchfeld Canal in Vienna runs through the 21st district of Floridsdorf and plays an important role in the irrigation of the Marchfeld and in flood protection. The Marchfeld Canal cycle path runs along the canal, offering a scenic route for cyclists and leading to Hainburg. The Danube Island - also called the "Island" for short - is an artificial island built between 1972 and 1988, 21.1 km long and up to 250 m wide between the Danube and the New Danube, which is a few meters below, in the urban area of Vienna and Klosterneuburg. The right side of the island forms the left bank of the Danube, which was dammed up a few meters near the end of the island at the Freudenau power plant (1999, head of fall 8.6 m). The island is part of Vienna's flood protection system and, together with the Old and New Danube, also serves as a local recreation area in Vienna's Danube area. The Danube Island Festival takes place on it every year. While the north and south parts of the island are natural, the middle third of the island was designed like a park.
