Altenberg Castle was built around the year 1000 by a noble family and is one of the oldest castles in the Basel area. After a fire around 1050, it was rebuilt, but abandoned again before 1100. Archaeological excavations have provided important insights into early castle construction.

The Burghalden castle ruins lie above Liestal and date back to the 11th/12th century. They once served to protect the Ergolz valley. Today, only remnants of the walls and parts of the keep are visible. The short climb leads through the forest and offers a beautiful view of Liestal and the surrounding Jura hills.

Very beautiful, mystical place with a temple ruin from the ancient Romans. The temple was for the goddess Ceres, goddess of growth and fertility. Good place for a snack or to have a barbecue, but not suitable for children as there are no safety guards on the rock edges. Sure-footedness and good footwear required
