The Schaunberg ruins, often called Schaunburg, are one of the most impressive historical sites in Upper Austria. They tower above the Eferding Basin in the municipality of Hartkirchen and were once the largest castle complex in the state. Built around 1150 by Heinricus de Scovenberch, a member of the Julbach noble family, they are the ancestral seat of the Counts of Schaunberg and the center of the county of the same name. Originally approximately 17,500 square meters in size, they were the largest castle complex in Upper Austria.

Beautiful hike through the beech forest, away from the forest path. Insider path, 😉 strenuous but with great different views 🤗😉

The village is located southeast of Prambachkirchen and consists of a few farms and several residential buildings. A little to the west of it, on a hill, is Dachsberg Castle, which houses the Dachsberg Gymnasium, a private grammar school run by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales.
