The extensive landscape park surrounding Graz's Eggenberg Castle, with its valuable trees, is one of the most precious garden monuments in the country.

Entrance fee is €2, which is definitely worth it.

A guided tour is mandatory for a visit to the state rooms. It costs €18 for adults, and the park entrance fee of €2 is deducted. Exciting and very educational, the other three museums are included in the price. The coin museum is particularly recommended, where you can learn a lot about the history of money and Balthasar von Eggenberg, the great-grandfather of the owner of the palace and builder of the previous castle.

Until 1810, the castle chapel dedicated to the Apostle Thomas stood next to the bell tower. It was a Romanesque round building that was probably built in the 12th century. The building was spared from the French demolitions, but its copper roof was removed. The chapel fell into disrepair due to the effects of the weather and was eventually partially demolished. Today, only the foundations are visible and can be seen via a steel walkway next to the bell tower. The chapel of the Imperial Palace in Goslar is directly related to St. Thomas. The Romanesque lions from the chapel entrance are in the Hatzendorf State Vocational School, and copies are in the Joanneum State Museum. Parts of the frescoes have also been transferred to a castle (the citizens "helped themselves").

You should make a detour here when visiting the Schlossberg. The well-maintained grounds give an idea of what the chapel might have looked like when it existed.

The clock tower standing on the Schlossberg is the landmark of the Styrian capital and can be seen from many corners of the old town. I recommend you come here on a warm summer evening and take a snack with you. Then at sunset you can enjoy dinner with the best company with your friends and the beautiful view.
