10月 11, 2025, South Shore Trail of Lake Staffelsee
A great route through the forest directly along the lake, very pleasant to cycle or walk.

The idyllic Pflegersee is not far from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With a view of the Königsstand mountain range, you can swim here or stop off at the nearby mountain inn.

Beautiful location, not only as a place to swim, but also a very nice rest area with benches for a short rest. Wonderful view of the Staffelsee.

The cycling and hiking trail at Lake Staffelsee is worth a trip at any time of the year. Not suitable for racing bikes.

Nice path for walks, hikes. Also suitable for MTB and cyclocrossers. Due to its proximity to the Murnau train station, this path is often the starting point for trips around the lake.

A lovely cafe next to the lake. You have a stunning view of the Konigstand stands in front of the lake. The cafe serves food and beverage. There is a parking lot 5 min walk from the cafe. The lake is a starting point of many hiking trails. Good place to stop after your day.

Free parking space. If you feel like it after the tour, you can take a dip in the lido or stop in the restaurant on the lake. Due to the lido, it is to be expected that the parking lot will be occupied early on nice days. There are a few alternative parking spaces on the road to Pflegeersee. Those who shy away from the vertical meters to the Königsstand or just want to take a short tour between two showers can switch to the Prälatensteig. The Prälatensteig is not particularly spectacular and apparently not so much used. Anyone entering the Prälatensteig from the north may therefore have to play a little scouting before the single trail is found. The climb does not lead as close to the rock walls as hoped, there is basically only one point that reaches the Seles walls, everything else runs a few meters below the walls through the forest. There are some nice views of the valley, Farchant and the Kuhflucht waterfalls. The climb itself is very narrow and, apart from a few places, not particularly demanding. But you should be sure-footed. The slope has a lot of inclination, missteps could lead to uncomfortable balls in some places, but a steep fall is not to be expected. However, some longer passages lead through thick, knee-high grass. Those who are out and about after rainy days have to expect wet pants down to the knee or wear rainproof pants. We did not come across ticks on the Prälatensteig, but maybe we were just lucky :-)

The Staffelsee is a 4.6 km long and 3.7 km wide lake in the Ammer-Loisach hill country in the southernmost district of Upper Bavaria, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. It is almost eight square kilometers in size and has a depth of almost 40 meters. The Toteissee, whose basin was formed by the Loisach Glacier, was created in the Würm Ice Age. Because of its protected location between the molasse ribs of the Murnauer Mulde, the lake is only shallowly dug out. The base of the lake, whose water level was around ten meters higher than today at the end of the Würm Ice Age, has many ice-polished conglomerate islands from the Upper Oligocene (so-called Wörth conglomerate). In the so-called Staffelsee inventory there is a report of a church property called “Staphinseie”. “Stafnensis” can be found as a Latinized form. It is not sufficiently clear whether these sites actually point to Lake Staffelsee. But there is also a certain similarity to the Bavarian short forms Steffl or Stefferl for the first name Stefan or Stephan. The abbreviations Stoffl or Stofferl for Christoph also come into consideration. Other derivations connect the numerous shoals with the term “step” in the sense of stairs and the name (easel/easel is a dialect expression with this meaning in southern Germany).
