The Thuringian Open-Air Museum has two locations: In the listed village of Hohenfelden, historic buildings, such as the school and the former rectory, have been preserved in their original locations. At the museum's main site, the "Am Eichenberg" museum grounds, historic rural buildings from various Thuringian villages have been and are being relocated. Here, for example, you'll find the oldest post mill in the Free State and a rare half-timbered house.

Elxleben is located on the Wipfra, a tributary of the Gera. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and fields. Elxleben was first mentioned in documents in 1120. The town has a long history and was an important trading center in the Middle Ages.
