The Kemnat castle ruins are located in Kaufbeuren in the Ostallgäu. The former hilltop castle was built in the 12th century. The high medieval keep has been preserved. In the 1980s there was an extensive renovation and the installation of a covered viewing platform from which you have a wonderful view. Access is free. On boards you will learn a lot about the history of the castle. Already knew? The everyday name "Römerturm" has no historical meaning. Kemnat Castle is the ruin of a spur castle and was the seat of the medieval lordship of Großkemnat. The only thing left of the once important hilltop castle today is the keep, which is erroneously referred to as the "Roman tower" and is marked on maps as the watchtower. It is located in Großkemnat, a district of the eastern Allgäu town of Kaufbeuren about four kilometers from the center. The name of the castle derives from the Latin caminata, which means heated room or building (Wikipedia)

The "Roman Tower" does not come from Roman times, but is the keep of Kemnat Castle, which was built in 1185. In 1264 the last Staufer king Konradin was a guest at the castle. The construction of the palace was partially demolished in the 19th century. Of the castle complex, the keep, the office building and the castle well, 20 meters to the east, with a depth of 24 meters, have been preserved. The tower is accessible during the day and offers a wonderful view of the region and the entire chain of the Alps. The ascent to the tower is definitely worth it - you have a great view - a board tells you which mountains can be seen.
