The Kembs Locks are located on the Grand Canal d'Alsace, near Rhine Island. They play a vital role in river navigation and managing the flow of the Rhine. There are several locks in this area, including the Kembs-Niffer Lock, designed by Le Corbusier and inaugurated in 1961. This lock has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2005 due to its remarkable architecture. The locks allow boats to pass between the Grand Canal d'Alsace and the Rhine, facilitating river transport. They are also integrated into EDF's hydroelectric projects, which harness the river's energy to generate electricity.

Inseli Rheinfelden / Inseli Burgstell Inseli Burgstell Stein Castle used to stand on the Inseli. That's why it is also called Burgstell. It was the home of King Rudolf of Rheinfelden. Today it is a beautiful park with a view of the Rhine and the old town. The home of the Counts of Rheinfelden. The Counts of Rheinfelden built Stein Castle on the island in the 10th century because of its strategically favorable location. After the death of Rudolf of Rheinfelden, the Zähringers and later King Rudolf of Habsburg lived in the castle. In 1446 it was razed in the war between Austria and Basel. From 1685-1745 there was also an artillery fortress on the rock. Rhine bridge to Inseli. In the 12th century a bridge was built from both banks to Burgstell. The tree-covered shell limestone rock, called "Inseli", divides the 147-meter-long bridge into two sections angled at about 120 degrees from each other. The church in Hofen is a real highlight due to its picturesque location alone, and a visit inside is definitely worth it. There is also a fountain right next to the church where you can fill up with water.

Beautiful climb from both sides with a great view towards Eggenertal. Usually little traffic. Good opportunity to turn off the road with the gravel or mountain bike onto the forest paths towards Bürgeln Castle or Hochblauen.

Apart from the fantastic approach, the Belchen offers perhaps the most beautiful view in the entire Black Forest - often with a view of the Alpine chain from the Zugspitze in the east to Mont Blanc in the southwest.

Cycling along the shipping canal is wonderful, as the path directly on the river bank is perfectly flat and car-free. The crossing to the other side of the Grand Canal is in a northerly direction at the lock and the hydroelectric power station in Kembs.
