Beautiful cycle path in a great landscape

The buildings In the 14th century, the farms were surrounded by forests and swamps. They were gradually expanded by their owners into a fortified knight's seat. Today, Haag Castle consists of the former outer bailey and a forecourt to the north. The former manor house no longer exists. During the Spanish-Dutch War, the heavily fortified complex suffered from troops quartered there, who plundered it in 1584, partially demolished it and burned down the forecourt. In order to avoid further occupation, the magistrate of the city of Geldern turned to the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands, Alessandro Farnese, at the request of Baron Arnold von Boedberg, with the request to have the fortifications of Haag Castle demolished; with success, because the ramparts were torn down and the fortification walls demolished. Although the castle was marked as a hospital with Red Cross flags.

The Wissen Castle, a very well-maintained complex with a hotel.

A single building has been preserved from the former castle complex. But interesting.

From the Niers cycle path, Wissener Schloß is located on the opposite side of the Niers bank.

Haag Castle is home to a golf club. A restaurant offers guests food and drinks.
