The cowshed, a highlight of Saxon Switzerland and of course always well attended

The Kuhstall is a rock gate 11 meters high, 17 meters wide and 24 meters deep. Its name probably came about during the Thirty Years' War, because the local residents hid their cattle from the Swedish soldiers in the very wide rock gate. If you cross this rock gate, you get to a great vantage point over the Saxon rocky landscape. A crevice in the rock leads to the ascent to the Himmelsleiter, a very narrow, steep staircase that leads to the remains of an earlier castle. The cowshed is a main attraction of the famous Saxon Switzerland Painter's Trail. August von Goethe visited this rock as early as June 1819.
