Two magnificent buildings tower over the town of Schleiden, past which the Olef River flows: the castle, which now houses a retirement home, and the church, built as a castle chapel. The restaurant mentioned in some posts appears to be permanently closed.

Schleiden Castle, located in the Eifel town of Schleiden, was a castle dating back to the late 12th century. Due to extensive damage in several wars, it was rebuilt into the castle's current location. I remember that you used to be able to eat very well in the castle restaurant. Unfortunately, that's not always the case at the new restaurant. It's now closed.

The medieval hilltop castle rises freely from the Rur valley to over 200 meters above sea level and is the imposing landmark of the town of Heimbach. You can take a look at the castle complex from almost anywhere in the town, and each time you look there is a new perspective. The courtyard, battlements and keep are open free of charge all year round. Parts of the complex are wheelchair accessible by elevator. Even from the courtyard there is an impressive panoramic view of Heimbach and the Rur valley - a climb up the keep increases the pleasure even further. Schleiden Castle used to be the castle of the lords of Schleiden from the house of the Counts of Blankenheim. Its origin is dated to the 12th century. Only the south wing and parts of the east wing remain from the earlier castle. When the complex was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century, the courtyard side was decorated with a Renaissance portal. In 1920 Schleiden Castle was sold to the Order of the Lazarists.
