The present-day castle had two, possibly even three, predecessor structures. After the Baden Margrave Hermann V was granted the town of Ettlingen, founded by the Hohenstaufen dynasty, by Emperor Frederick II, his son, Margrave Rudolf I of Baden, built a castle complex in the mid-13th century – possibly on the remains of a Hohenstaufen predecessor structure. However, no previous structure has yet been identified. The lower floors of the keep in the castle courtyard, which are still preserved today, date from this period. A magnificent Renaissance castle followed in the 16th century. Two round corner towers were added to the south wing, and the keep was given a half-timbered upper floor. The three-wing Renaissance complex surrounding the old keep, completed in 1600, was destroyed along with the entire town by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession (Wikipedia).

The impressive Rastatt Residential Palace is worth a stop, and not just because of the beautiful park. You can also visit the castle itself, the castle church and the military history museum or stop off at the park restaurant. Further information about opening times and admission prices can be found at https://www.schloss-rastatt.de.

Favorite Castle was built by Johann Michael Ludwig Rohrer between 1710 and 1730 in Rastatt-Förch. The builder was Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden (1675–1733), widow of the so-called Türkenlouis, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden (1655–1707), who had very clear ideas about what this baroque work of art with rich decorative interior furnishings should look like . In addition to the residence in Rastatt, it was intended to serve as a country pleasure palace for princely entertainment, socializing and games, hunting, masquerades, studies and raising children. The castle was, so to speak, the “pleasure castle”, while in the city it served more formal purposes. The park at the castle is - as befits a castle park - very attractive.

Ettlingen Castle is well worth seeing. Also very close by is a lovely little rose garden to include.

The historic old town of Ettlingen impresses with its narrow streets, beautiful cafés and historic houses next to modern city architecture. Ettlingen Castle rises in the middle of the old town, the oldest parts of which go back to a medieval castle that was converted into a representative Renaissance complex in the 16th century. Ettlingen is always worth a visit.

The gateway to the northern Black Forest with its old town, the many cafés, the town hall square, the castle, the stock of well-kept old half-timbered houses, the gastronomy (especially the Vogelbräu brewery) and many other highlights are a must-see. Even the longest journey is worthwhile. Of course there is also an excellent hotel business, --- and castle festivals, the Alb, the Bismarkturm and and.....

The former margravial property known as Rotenfels Castle is made up of various parts: firstly, there is a margravial ironworks founded in 1729, which was then replaced by a crucible and stoneware factory, which was then converted into today's Rotenfels country castle. In its immediate vicinity is a rock cellar created in 1753, which was built over in 1804 with a count's pleasure house (its remains are now known as the "Witches' Dance Ground"), when there were still no plans for a castle. And finally, there is the former extensive castle park with various architectural relics, which today is partly continued as a spa park, but partly has become overgrown and converted into forest, as well as agricultural and forestry areas that formerly belonged to Rotenfels. The Great Schanzenberg and the Little Schanzenberg with their respective ramparts from the High Middle Ages are also located within this property, although they have no direct historical connection with the castle (and today, despite their proximity to the castle, they belong administratively to the neighboring municipality of Kuppenheim). The current castle itself was largely built by converting the previous crucible and earthenware factory, to which the majority of its building fabric can be traced back, both in the main building and in the two commercial buildings flanking the castle square (former horse stables and coach houses). It was ultimately only used as a stately castle for just under 100 years, and during this time mostly only occasionally, for example as a summer or hunting residence, and after the discovery of the thermal spring after 1839, for a few decades as a private spa for the count's family with its own bathhouse built for this purpose (no longer exists).
