The Hesselberg transmitter (also known as the Wittelshofen 1 radio transmission point) is a transmission tower for VHF, digital television, mobile communications and microwave radio on the Hesselberg near Wassertrüdingen. The operator of the system is Deutsche Funkturm, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG. The 98 m high transmitter, visible from afar, is a basic network transmitter for the Bavarian DVB-T transmitter network. The transmission area includes the region of western Middle Franconia and northern Swabia. At 674 meters above sea level. The transmission tower located at NN is of an unusual design: It is designed as a hybrid tower and consists of a free-standing steel truss tower as the base and a guyed transmission mast as the upper part. The mast has radio links at heights of 35 meters, 40 meters and 88.50 meters. The current transmitter building was built between 1968 and 1970. In 1970 the analogue television channels went into operation. In 1993, the station received a new, five-ton, fiberglass cylinder that contained new TV transmitter antennas. The costs for the entire renovation amounted to 2.1 million DM. Analogue television was broadcast until the switch to DVB-T on November 25, 2008. Radio amateurs also maintain a relay station for voice radio, packet radio and ATV on the Hesselberg. The respective transmitters on the frequencies 439 MHz, 1240 MHz, 2400 MHz and 10.2 GHz are operated with the 15 W ERP (24 W EIRP) approved by the Federal Network Agency. The energy for operation is generated exclusively by solar cells and wind power. The discussion about communication options in the event of a blackout that arose as a result of the war in Ukraine and the resulting energy shortage make this relay station a showcase project in amateur radio circles, as it enables all radio amateurs in its catchment area to communicate with each other even if the public power supply is completely out.
