マイン川は、全長527キロメートルで、ライン川で最も長い右支流であり、ドイツで最も重要な河川の一つです。バイエルン州で2つの源流（ヴァイサー・マイン川とローター・マイン川）から始まり、特徴的なループを描きながら東から西へと流れます。その長い旅は、マインシュピッツェと呼ばれる場所で終わり、そこではギンズハイム＝グスタフスブルクとヴィースバーデンのマインツ＝コストハイム地区の間、マインツ旧市街の真向かいでライン川に合流します。

Originally designed as a garden pavilion, it developed from the early 18th century onwards into the residence of the princes and later dukes of Nassau. Due to its elegant architecture and extensive palace grounds, it is often called the "Versailles on the Rhine."
