The Catholic Youth Center is also a popular rest stop for hikers. It's self-service, but the prices are reasonable. There are also several rooms available for rent for events.

The large information panel in front of the castle marks the start of the historical trail. The first image is a reconstruction of the castle as it was built in 1482. A moat with a drawbridge and a surrounding wall (still standing today) with corner towers enclosed the inner courtyard with its buildings and a residential tower.

Around the year 1000, a castle built on stilts already existed at the current site. In 1613, the medieval valley castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style moated castle according to the plans of the Württemberg court architect Heinrich Schickhardt. The small path that crossed the Ammer River via a steel bridge is now permanently closed.

In 2023, the Berlin-based COPRO Group acquired the entire property with 3900m2 and 32ha of land. A new photovoltaic system is visible on the roof. The entire castle, including the Marienkapelle, is closed to the public. However, you can now walk around the entire outdoor area.

The castle is of course the centre of Hirrlingen. Today the castle houses the following facilities. In addition to the town hall, the notary's office, storage areas for the municipality, a doctor's office, a naturopathy practice, the fire brigade, the German Red Cross, the bakery, private apartments, the Bellni studio and the theatre community, all of which are housed here.

The municipal administration is located in part of the former castle.

The Neckar Valley Cycle Path runs above Mühlen - and also above the railway line.
